Company Summary:

Western Cider is a startup cidery in Missoula, Montana – a beautifully weird mountain town in the Northern Rockies. Our venture into cider started six years ago when Michael Billingsley was infected by an obsession with apples. He planted 2,500 cider apple trees in the Bitterroot Valley – just south of Missoula. He has continued to plant hundreds of trees every year since - on his orchard and orchards throughout the valley. Now, he is finally in the process of using those apples, as well as apples from throughout Western Montana and neighboring Washington, to produce a unique line of ciders in cans, bottles and kegs. 

As a company, Western Cider aspires to create an institution of great cider, good times and a life worth living in this far-flung region of the American West. We are currently a small group committed to forming a positive workplace focused on making quality cider for the enjoyment of all.

Job Description:

The Assistant Cider Maker position takes direction from our head cider maker on all the ins and outs of making cider commercially.  This position requires you follow strict standard operating procedures for sanitizing tanks and sophisticated pieces of equipment such as a cross flow filter, bottling equipment, and canning line.  The Assistant Cider Maker is also responsible for running and maintaining our bottle line, and assisting our mobile canner on canning days. Other job tasks include building orders for distributors, restocking kegs for the tasting room, counting warehouse inventory, topping off barrels monthly, and performing barrel maintenance.  The work is labor intensive, and demands a successful candidate to be enthusiastic, positive, and a highly motivated individual who wants to be part of a new up and coming cidery.

Prerequisites Required:

  • Previous experience working in a cidery, winery, or brewery

  • High School diploma including computer competency and effective written communication

  • Clean and valid driver’s license

  • Ability to work rotating shifts and adjust schedule to meet production demands

  • Ability to work both independently and with a team

  • Mechanical aptitude and creativity

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

Skills and Experience Preferred:

  • Forklift experience

  • Basic understanding of chemical and microbiological processes relevant to cider making

  • Knowledge of sanitation principles and practices

  • Tasting experience and understanding of flavors and balance

  • Curiosity about ciders, cider styles, and cider flavors
